Abstract

According to verse 30 of Surah Al-Baqarah, God placed a caliph on earth.

There is a difference of opinion among the commentators about the identity of this caliph and his successor.

In this article, we are trying to compare the opinions and arguments of Allameh Tabatabai and Sheikh Sadeghi Tehrani in this regard and judge between them.

The findings of the research indicate that these two commentators consider the caliph as humankindand refer to verses from the Qur'an (69 Araaf, 14 Yunus and 62 Nemal) for the generality of the caliphate.

This reference does not seem to be defensible due to the strong appearance of these verses in the succession of human generations.

Of course, the thanksgiving context of verse 29 of al-Baqarah is used in analogy with the confrontation of "who shall make mischief" with " Thy praise" and the implication of verse 11 of Surah Al-A'raf on the worship of the angels of the human kind, the substitution of the human kind for God.
