Abstract
The connectivity of Quranic verses refers to any grammatical, thematic, conceptual, and phonetic connections between verses upon which interpreters base their exegetical interpretations.Given the increasing tendency of interpreters toward verse connections, elucidating the foundations of connectivity and its impact on types of verse connectivity is essential to systematize the discovery of these connections.The main issue is examining the relationship between foundations of connectivity and types of verse connectivity.Tafsir Tasnīm and Fī Ẓilāl al-Qurʾān—which emphasize verse connectivity from Shia and Sunni perspectives—were selected as case studies using analytical-comparative method to examine this relationship and compare similarities/differences.The results show that both interpreters agree on key foundations such as the incorruptibility of the Quran and the divinely ordained arrangement of verses, though they differ in some areas.Quṭb, with a network perspective within the surah context, and Javādī Āmulī, with a network perspective within the Quranic context, have arrived at different connectivities based on the foundation of coherence and structural-semantic bonds of the Quran.Quṭb, with a literary approach and focus on imagistic language, emphasizes the artistic and expressive features of the Quran and views its expressive style as meaningful images with unique musicality.Javādī Āmulī, based on the language of fitrah, stresses rational principles for discovering verse connectivity in both lexical and semantic domains.
