The verse "الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ" (Men are the protectors and maintainers of women) is one of the most significant socio-legal verses in explaining the roles and responsibilities of men and women in the family. With the emergence of new challenges, the need to revisit its interpretation has increased. Fazlur Rahman, using a socio-historical method and his "double movement" theory, interprets qiwamah (guardianship) within the framework of the era of revelation. Ayatollah Khamenei, with a jurisprudential approach and Islamic rationality, seeks to provide an understanding of qiwamah that aligns with contemporary social conditions. The aim of this article, through a descriptive-analytical research method, is to examine the methodological foundations of these two thinkers in understanding and interpreting verse 34 of Surah An-Nisa. The findings indicate that both perspectives, despite differences in their foundations and methods, agree that men and women do not inherently possess superiority over one another. The difference lies in the fact that Fazlur Rahman emphasizes the economic role of men and argues that with women contributing to household expenses, the superiority of men diminishes. Ayatollah Khamenei views qiwamah as stemming from natural differences and the complementary nature of men and women, where men, without inherent superiority, bear the responsibility of providing for the family's livelihood.
